What is the 11 Plus Exam?
The 11 Plus is an entrance exam taken by pupils at the beginning of Year 6. It’s used by grammar schools and some independent schools to assess academic ability. Most tests are sat in early autumn, often around September.
There’s no single national version of the exam. Depending on where you live and which schools you're applying to, the content and format can vary. GL Assessment is the most commonly used provider, but many schools write their own papers. That’s why it’s so important to check the entry requirements of each individual school or region.
What Topics Do 11 Plus Exam Papers Include?
Although the structure of the test can differ, most 11 plus exam papers feature a mix of the following subjects:
Verbal Reasoning
This section focuses on how well your child can work with language, patterns and logic. It might include spotting word relationships, completing sentences, or solving language-based puzzles.
Non-Verbal Reasoning
Here, children tackle problems based on shapes and visual patterns. They may be asked to identify sequences, rotate images, or work out spatial relationships.
English
The English section usually contains comprehension questions, along with grammar, punctuation and spelling exercises. In some cases, a creative writing task may also be included.
Mathematics
Maths questions are based on Key Stage 2 topics, such as number work, fractions, measures and worded problems. These papers are normally timed, so speed and accuracy are both essential.
Not every school uses all four subjects, and the type of questions can vary quite a bit between exam boards. That's why working with the right 11 plus papers is key to effective preparation.
