About A Level Maths Tutors in York

A Level Maths and A Level Further Maths have been reformed with the new syllabus being taught.

The A Level Maths course use to consist of six units; 4 compulsory Core units; namely C1, C2, C3 and C4 and choice of two out of the following applied units: D1 (Decision 1), M1 (Mechanics 1) or S1 (Statistics 1). Typically a student will study C1, C2 and one applied module in the first year, followed by C3, C4 and one further applied module in the second year. However, with the new changes all students will have to sit the same papers in a linear examination series that all come at the end of year 13.

The new A Level Maths course consists of 3 papers containing pure Maths, mechanics and statistics. There will no longer be modules which students can take, although these will still be available for those who want to resit their A Level Maths exams but only until 2018, after which there will be no option to take these exams. The Further Maths A Level, which is generally studied alongside the Maths A Level, has also been updated and is assessed by terminal examination for all exam boards, AQA, OCR, MEI and Edexcel. The Further Maths A Level will consist of three compulsory exams and a further two optional modules. An example of how the AQA Maths specification works is below:

All students must study this content.

• OT1: Mathematical argument, language and proof

• OT2: Mathematical problem solving

• OT3: Mathematical modelling

• Compulsory content

Options

Students must study two of these options.

• Optional application 1 – mechanics

• Optional application 2 – statistics

• Optional application 3 – discrete

A Level Maths is one of the most popular subjects chosen at A Level, it is also regarded as one of the most difficult. Very complex mathematical concepts are looked at in depth, and a rigorous understanding of how and why things work is required in order to do well.

In most schools across the country, including York, there is a shortage of maths teachers. As a result, in some schools the standard of teaching has dropped, simply because there are less and less teachers who can teach to the required level, in particular the higher echelons of A Level and Further Maths.
