New GCSE Maths 9-1 3D Pythagoras and Trigonometry

At York Maths Tutor we are reviewing different topics from the GCSE Maths syllabus each week and directing students to the best resources to help with these topics. This week we are reviewing 3D Pythagoras and 3D Trigonometry, or SOH CAH TOA as some students like to call it. Both of these topics have become more prominent in the new GCSE Maths 9-1 exam papers and specimen papers as the new style of questions look to add more context and problem solving into the tests. The old right angled straight forward calculate this length or angel questions seem to have vanished on the higher tier paper and they have now been replaced with 3D problems that require the student to understand what needs to be calculated before they even start to use SOH CAH TOA or Pythagoras’s theorem.

To help with these 3D Trigonometry and Pythagoras questions the trick is to see through the context and understand what the question is asking for. Look for the clues in the question, why have they given you that length or particular angle, it is because it needs to be used in your calculation of the answer. To get better at these applied questions and seeing through the context practise of many different types of questions is essential. If students are still struggling with these then an expert GCSE Maths tutor in York can always help which is where we would be on hand if you thought your child needed this. To get access to the best GCSE Maths revision materials we always recommend a free resource as there are plenty out there who provide exceptional resources for no cost.
