The New GCSE Maths Topics

Back in 2015 the GCSE Maths reforms came into effect. Since then we have had one round of exams last summer and our thoughts were confirmed when it was announced that 18% was the pass mark, indicating that the new GCSE Maths papers were considerably more difficult than previous years where on average, somewhere between 30-40% was required for a C grade. This huge shift in marks required is due to the introduction of new topics but even more so new question types. The old GCSE Maths syllabus could be learnt via methods and repetition of those methods would ensure a high mark but that is no longer as true as it use to be because questions are now much more applied and contextualised. These new contextualised questions means that methods have to be applied in different ways, backwards or using a combination of methods to derive an answer. Examples of this include reverse percentage questions which have used fractions as well and box plots and cumulative frequency curve questions which use to be straight forward now have much more context and students need to understand the topics to a much deeper level in order to effectively answer the questions.
