GCSE Maths Topics

The new GCSE Maths 9-1 course has introduced a number of topics which students have found challenging and existing topics have been expanded to include more difficult question types . The following lists some of the topics that students are finding challenging this year:

  • Surds - Surds is an old topic but is one which student notoriously find tricky. With rationalising and proof questions appearing in specimen papers, it was certainly an area that students needed more help on.

  • Functions - One of the new GCSE Maths topics that use to part of the A Level Maths course. Suppose to be level 8 and 9 questions in the most part, but with a repeatable method it is a topic that most students eventually get to grips with.

  • Iterative methods - Another new GCSE Maths topic which also introduces new notation which puts many people off. Similar to functions there is often a repeatable method for most question types and therefore a topic that many can conquer.

  • Venn Diagrams - Always a feature of the old GCSE Statistics course which has now been introduced in to the new 9-1 GCSE Maths course. Again this one is notation heavy which puts many people off, but learn the notation and it isn't too bad.

  • Vectors - Possibly one of the most feared topics and always a higher level question. The vector questions in the new GCSE Maths specimen papers look to be even more difficult. Once students understand the concept then they can build up the difficulty level and normally do ok. At York Maths Tutor we have some really good tips to help you overcome vector questions.
