GCSE Maths

At York Maths Tutor we work closely with a number of tutoring agencies across the Yorkshire area and having had feedback from these we can safely say that GCSE Maths is by far the most requested subject for tuition this year. This is almost certainly linked to the curriculum changes which will appear in this year's exams for the first time. The changes to the GCSE Maths syllabus have been significant; not only has the grading structure changed to 1-9 but there a number of new topics and many new types of questions. On top of this, from the evidence of the specimen papers provided by the exam boards AQA, OCR and Edexcel, it is clear that the question style and exam format has changed considerably making the GCSE Maths papers much more difficult. The new 'C' grade is a level 4/5 with many 6 forms and colleges accepting a level 4 as a grade C for this year's exam. Mock exams across most schools have been reported with significantly reduced attainment with the new papers in comparison to the mock papers of previous years. We believe that this year's GCSE Maths exam is likely to be most challenging paper set in recent times. However this will mean that the grade boundaries are likely to be relatively low. All in all it is clear that many students and parents are concerned with this year's GCSE Maths exam. Our advice is to revise as well you can, covering all of the specimen papers provided, learn the new topics well as these are likely to be tested and if you require additional support contact York Maths Tutor and we will be happy to help.
